Research
Madalyn's idea to represent emotional support systems (family/friends) in her piece originated from a tough situation in her own family. Now her theme is broader than that specific situation and, as research for her choreography, she draws inspiration from relationships between other people. By moving away from specific personal relationships, Madalyn gives the audience the opportunity to connect to her movement and reflect on how their own supportive relationships have helped them through tough situations.
Madalyn's dancers will portray many different emotions: struggle, anger, sadness, and love, to name a few. Madalyn does not want to direct the audience towards happiness or sadness through her piece. Instead, she hopes to promote recognition of the connection between the audience’s support system and themselves, allowing the audience to feel a strong sense of appreciation for the people who support them.
Rehearsal
Madalyn begins her rehearsals with set movement, which she develops through her own improvisation. She will eventually work movement into her choreography developed by the dancers through group improvisation sessions. These sessions will allow the dancers to find movement that fits their bodies best. Additionally, by improvising together, the dancers will develop a sense of family. By fostering this connection, the dancers will feel comfortable enough with each other to dance together as the close-knit characters they portray in the piece.
Madalyn describes her piece as modern/contemporary, with each section of her piece taking on its own distinct movement quality. These sections will feature diverse movement qualities such as gliding, pressing, slashing, and punching. Each section’s distinct movement quality will clearly define the differences between each character in the piece.
Madalyn hopes that, if nothing else, her piece causes the audience to connect with the different moods her dancers portray. She wants to make a piece which fits the requirements of the Composition III class and which portrays her concept as she imagines it. She plans to give the audience a way to look into their own lives through her piece.
